Coolest Item City Council Gavel - As a young kid volunteering in local politics, I was given the chance to work with someone who many find truly inspiring today. I worked under Beto O' Rourke when he served as the Mayor Pro Tempore position. At the time, I was only a volunteer in the city council office and worked filing paperwork and transporting items around the building, so I didn't work directly under Beto; however, when he was nominated for Mayor Pro Tempore, a sort of stand in for Vice Mayor, he took the position only on the promise another would be elected in the next year symbolizing a duty council members shared as a team. Due to this, we had to order quite a few gavels as each member kept their own when they led meetings and when Beto stepped down from office, he gave me his as a token of appreciation for the work I did along with a copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence. It is still one of my proudest possessions and I relish the fact I knew him before his political career took off. Nerdiest Item Box of Highlighter Refills - In high school, I used Stabilo highlighters for notes in every class in addition to my bullet journal. For me, my highlighters were necessary to doing well in class. One day, while highlighting my notes, one started to get streaky and dry and I exploded in a panic fearing I would begin to fail all my coursework if I did not have my highlighters. I searched online for where I could buy more, but the highlighters were already expensive on their own and could only be bought in packs. The next alternative were these refills, but I could only find them from a niche online art store based in Illinois. I called them up and asked if they could ship to Texas and they had said, they didn't even have them in stock, but they would get right on it. A few days later, they called back saying "We ordered a [BOX] of the highlighter refills thinking we'd get a single box (as pictured) for you. But they sent us a box of 20... We never sell these.... do you want them all for $5 extra to cover shipping? So that's how I own over 250+ Stabilo highlighter refills! Biggest Accomplishment Columbia Latin Diploma (with attached translation!) - This is a bit more of a personal one, but I guess that's the nature of this category. I just recently graduated from Columbia University and it's definitely my biggest accomplishment because of all the work that I put in not only prepping for this but throughout my time in school. I came from a low income family and my parents instilled in me a strong sense of education from very early on. Going to an Ivy League university was completely unheard of in my family and I could not have done it without a strong support system and perseverance. In college I balanced coursework with working two part time jobs while living in New York City, a city not really known for its frugality. I had to endure online school while the pandemic was at its worst while living in the epicenter of the United States but I only let that drive me even more. I am immensely proud of this piece of paper, even if the traditional Latin makes it seem a bit pretentious. Weirdest Item Silver Crucifix - Growing up in a religious household definitely gave me a lot of weird stories to tell. Especially when my parents used religion as a second baby sitter for me and my siblings. We have always had this small candy setup as a place to leave behind any treats from parties or to have snacks after a stressful day. However, my parents couldn't consistently watch the space to ensure we didn't take too much, so they left a silver crucifix of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to do the watching over for them. They told us early on that Jesus knew how much sugar we had and that gluttony was a sin. They pointed to bible verses to prove this and made it a consistent point during our upbringing. This crucifix terrified me every time I wanted to grab a packet of marshmallows, convinced Jesus was recording my sins to use against me on Judgement Day. Most Neglected Item Photobooth - As someone only recently diagnosed with ADHD, I should have known way back when. Some thing I tend to do is get really excited about a new project and dump a lot of money into making sure that these projects were successful. I became convinced that I could run a successful photobooth business for parties and events and purchased a brand new Kingdom Photobooth. It was fun for the first few weeks, but then I didn't realize it would be a constant chore to take it to and from events and parties. It was HEAVY! Who knew? Now, it sits like a bonafide coat rack. And a terrible one at that.
