Dearest listeners, gather round for it is time for a tale. What kind of tale do you ask? Well, a tale of the kings, and greed, and most of all why you must never anger the gods. Now listen closely as I tell you the tale of Erysichthon.
Erysichthon was a king in Thessaly, and he wasn't particularly a good king. But he was very prosperous and had many riches. He even had a beautiful daughter who was favoured by Poseidon. And when you happen to be well off, you often like to have a lot of big parties with endless feasts and guests. And if you're going to large lavish parties, you need to have a place in which to have them, don't you? So Erysichthon decided that he must have a new feast hall, and it must be made from the finest of woods that could be found. Unfortunately, the only place that had the diversity and quality of wood Erysichthon was looking for happened to be a sacred grove of the goddess Demeter. Erysichthon was not a pious man and wanted nothing more than to show off all the wealth he had. So he and 200 men armed with axes went into this grove cutting down these sacred trees. When they came to the center of the grove, they came upon a large oak that was covered in wreaths for each prayer that had been given to Demeter. Upon seeing this tree, all the other men stopped what they were doing and refused to cut down this most sacred of trees. But Erysichthon insisted, picking up an axe himself and cutting this tree down. In his greed, he forgot that trees are where the dryads live, and when he cut down this tree, he was killing this nymph. With her dying breaths, she cursed him "May you never be satisfied by the bounty of Demeter again." And Demeter heard this curse and was much enraged and sorrowful, and she honoured this. And a great and terrible hunger burned in Erysichthon's belly, and from that moment on no amount of food would sate Erysichthon's hunger. And oh how he hungered. He would eat and eat and eat, anything and everything he could manage to get his hands on, and nothing was ever enough. Instead of getting to build this feast hall to display his vast amounts of wealth, he started selling every bit of his wealth to buy more and more food. And still nothing satisfied. Erysichthon was so desperate that he sold his own daughter into slavery to get more food. Being favoured of Poseidon however, he had given her the ability to shapeshift. And she escaped, and she would come back. Only to have her father sell her again until she no longer came back. When food no longer satisfied, he turned to trying to satisfy that gnawing hunger with bones and rocks and absolutely anything and everything he could manage to put in his mouth, and still like Tantalus, respite was always out of his reach. Finally, Erysichthon had nothing left, nothing to ease the burning gnawing pit in his stomach. He had lost everything for the greed in his heart. But he had one final option left to him, he thought, crazed and maddened by his hunger. And in his desperation, he ate himself. And when morning came, there was nothing left of him and thus Demeter's anger was soothed.
And that dear listeners is the tale of Erysichthon. May you always remember never take what doesn't belong to you, and never forget, though she may be the goddess of harvest and growing things, one does not underestimate or disrespect Demeter for her anger burns just as bitter and cold as the coldest winter, and she is not to be trifled with.
